Mahatma Gandhi was the most outstanding and revered leader in the Indian freedom movement. He is more popularly addressed as the “Father of the Nation” and “Mahatma.” Gandhi Jayanti falls on every October 2 to commemorate his birthday. This occasion is remembered not only in India but all over the world as a symbol of non-violence and peace. His life has been a wonderful example of dedication to the principles and ideals that someone follows, which has inspired people up until this date. Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2nd October, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was a Diwan of Porbandar, and his mother, Putlibai, was a very pious and religious woman. His childhood life and family values influenced his life. He completed his initial education in Porbandar and Rajkot. In his childhood, he had a very simple life and family surroundings.
Gandhi went to England in 1888 and took law studies. After completing his law studies from University College of London, England, he returned to India in 1891. But, he was not very successful in the field of law. Then, in 1893, he had to shift to South Africa in connection with a legal case, after which his life took a turn.
In one’s life, Gandhi’s experience with South Africa becomes a beginning point for the life of a politician. In 1893, he had gone there in order to fight a court case and faced racial discrimination. One particular incident, when he was thrown out of the first class train compartment due to the color of his skin, changed the course of his life. He decided to fight for the cause of the Indian community.
Gandhi returned to India in 1915 and began to actively take part in the freedom movement. He joined the Indian National Congress and soon became a prominent figure in Indian politics. There, Gandhi led movements for farmers, workers, and other underprivileged classes, and turned his fight into a big movement against British rule.
On 30 January 1948, Nathuram Godse had shot Mahatma Gandhi. Nathuram shot Gandhi when the latter was proceeding to a prayer meeting in Delhi. He was one person India and the entire world couldn’t afford to lose at the time of death.
