A great Indian freedom struggler, the one the world knows as “Bapu” and “Father of the Nation”, Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. His real name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His father Karamchand Gandhi was the Diwan of Porbandar and his mother Putlibai was a woman of extremely religious and moral values. The religiosity and commitment to truth of his mother, in fact, influenced Gandhi’s life deeply. He followed the tenets of truth and non-violence throughout his life and fought for Indian independence through the application of these tenets.
Gandhi received his initial education at Porbandar and Rajkot. The young Gandhi had shyness and hesitation like a common child, but a deep sense of truth and justice was building up inside him. He went to England in 1888. At the age of 19, he wanted to study law there. Gandhi completed his law degree from University College London. In England, Gandhi did not give up his Indian culture and values. Gandhi went back to India in 1891. He started practicing law in Mumbai. He did not achieve much success in that field.
It was not the same ordinary lawyer turning into a Mahatma. In 1893, he went to South Africa for a legal case and faced apartheid along with racial discrimination. It was while he was in South Africa that an incident took a complete U-turn in his life. He was thrown out of a train just due to his color. This incident eventually became the seed of a lifetime struggle for him. He decided to fight against injustice and defend the rights of the Indian community there. It is here that Gandhi laid the foundation of Satyagraha, or nonviolent resistance.
By the time Gandhi arrived in India in 1915, he had become an influential leader. He joined the Indian National Congress and initiated himself into the fight for Indian independence. The freedom struggle found a new direction under his leadership. The most crucial movements that came under his head were those founded on the principles of non-violence and Satyagraha. Gandhi believed that violence could not raise any permanent solution, so he chose the path of non-violent resistance.
He believed in the principles of truth and non-violence, on which the whole life is based. He had this weapon called Satyagraha, a strong one, and claimed that only by following the path of truth can a problem be solved. He often said, “Non-violence is the greatest religion.” Gandhi fought all his life not only for the freedom struggle but also for social reform. Besides this, he also campaigned for boycotts against untouchability, casteism, and women’s rights.
Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas inspired the struggle for peace and human rights not only in India but everywhere around the world. His ideology of non-violence inspired leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama. The United Nations declared October 2 as “International Day of Non-Violence”, thereby recognizing Gandhi’s contribution globally.
