MANILA, Philippines – Shut up, it’s finally happening! The Princess Diaries 3 is officially in the works after Adele Lim was hired to become the director of the new installment of the film series. Deadline announced the news in an exclusive report on Friday, October 4.
Debra Martin Chase, who served as producer for the first two Princess Diaries films, will return for the third installment. Meanwhile, The Princess Diaries 3‘s screenplay will be written by Flora Greeson.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide,” Lim said in a statement to Deadline.
Anne Hathaway, who plays Genovia queen Mia Thermopolis in the series, shared her excitement for the third film in an Instagram post on Friday.
“Miracles happen,” she wrote in her caption.
Anne earlier said in 2019 that an official script was complete for the third Princess Diaries film, adding that Chase and Julie Andrews wanted to do a new movie but the cast “don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect.”
The Princess Diaries, released in 2001, follows the story of Thermopolis navigating around the revelation by her grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. It was followed by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, released in 2004.
Both movies were directed by the late Garry Marshall, who died in July 2016. – Rappler.com
