Netflix have cancelled That 90s Show after just two seasons.

Actor Kurtwood Smith, who reprised his role as Red Forman in the streaming platform’s revival of beloved sitcom That 70s Show, has confirmed it won’t be returning for a third run.

In a post on Instagram, he wrote: ‘I know you have been asking me when season 3 is coming, but I have tough news… Netflix will not be renewing.

‘I just want to take a minute to say THANK YOU to all of the fans everywhere who supported and watched the show.

‘You have come up to me in random parts of the world when I’m traveling and reached out to me through social media and just been so wonderful.’

Kurtwood returned for the revival alongside Debra Jo Rupp, who played his wife Kitty in both shows, and he was delighted to share the screen with her again.

He continued: ‘I’ve loved every minute of getting to bring Grandpa Red to life for you all.

‘I’ve said it before, but it’s worth mentioning again… this show had so much heart behind it and the most wonderful cast, writers, directors, producers and crew an actor could hope to work with.

‘Thanks for letting Red and Kitty, their grandkid, all their grandkids friends and neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show and all of our wonderful guest cast members entertain you for two seasons.’

The revival was set 15 years after the original show, with Callie Haverda playing the daughter of Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon) as she visited the Formans for a summer with her grandparents.

Original stars like Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama also made guest appearances in the new show.

Despite the disappointment of the show being scrapped, Kurtwood has given some hope for fans and insisted bosses will be looking for a new home.

He added: ‘To steal Red Forman’s words…we aren’t going to be dumbasses… we will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school.’

Not surprisingly, news of the cancellation hasn’t gone down well with fans, with some people calling out Netflix’s habit of prematurely cancelling shows.

X user @cultofcurtis wrote: ‘WTF @Netflix — why do you keep canceling awesome shows? Imagine if every show was canceled after two seasons just because it’s not getting the numbers you expect. Give a show a chance, especially this one!’

Another fan, @MrBrokenEyes, branded the decision ‘pathetic’, adding: ‘#Netflix gonna Netflix.’

And @KayleyHamilton tweeted: ‘I’m actually devastated about That 90’s Show getting cancelled. I was really looking forward to the next season! @netflix

The first two seasons of That 90s Show are available to watch on Netflix.
