Shardiya Navratri is the biggest festival of Hinduism, where nine forms of Maa Durga are worshiped. This festival is celebrated four times in a year. Amongst four, two Gupt Navratri are celebrated and the other two are celebrated as Prakat Navratri. Like this, Prakat Navratri comes in both Chaitra month and in Ashwin month. Among them, Sharadiya Navratri, which falls in Ashwin month holds special significance. During these days, devotees keep fast for nine days and perform worship of Maa Durga, which terminates all their sorrows and brings happiness and prosperity in life.
Shardiya Navratri will begin this year on 3 October 2024. Ghat Sthapana will also be done this day also. According to Panchang, Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Ashwin Mahina will start on 3rd October at 12:18 pm and it will culminate on 4th October at 2:58 pm. So, Durga Ashtami will occur on 11th October, on that day Kanya Pujan will be done in particular. Navratri will conclude with Vijayadashami on 12th October 2024.
On the first day of Navratri, Ghat Sthapana holds special significance. On this day, devotees take a pledge to fast according to their ability and sow barley in an earthen altar and install it on the Kalash. While installing the Kalash, Lord Ganesha is worshiped first so that all the auspicious works can be successful. Meanwhile, deities are invoked followed by decorating the Kalash with mango leaves and flowers. Finally, the Aarti of mother is performed reciting Durga Saptashati and prasad is given.
In Navratri, nine different forms of Maa Durga are worshipped. It is termed as Navdurga.
This year, Navratri will begin from Thursday. It is being believed that Maa Durga will come in a palanquin, which is considered an ominous sign. Contrarily, the mother will depart on a rooster or charanayuddha, which is also symbolic of suffering and bereavement. This year’s belief prescribes that if Navratri commences on Monday or Sunday, then Maa arrives on an elephant; on a palanquin on Thursday or Friday; on a horse on Tuesday or Saturday; and on a boat on Wednesday. For the first time, a little concern is created because she has come in a palanquin.
During Navratri, devotees especially keep fasts and offer special prayers to Maa Durga. In the course of this time, various rituals and religious programs are organized. Kanya Pujan holds especial importance on the day of Durga Ashtami and Navami. As girls are considered to be the form of Maa Durga, by worshiping them on these days, devotees get special fruits.
The festival of Navratri ends with the day of Vijayadashami, popularly known as Dussehra. On this day good has triumphed over evil. It’s that love and admiration towards Maa Durga which makes this festival different in the life of the followers.
